Respite Care Services provide temporary assistance with daily living tasks, offering relief to primary caregivers. It can be offered in various settings, including community centers or the individual's home, and may include non-medical support and recreational activities. Historically, respite care addressed the strain on caregivers, often family members or friends, who provided round-the-clock care, especially needed in the first decade of the HIV pandemic. As HIV care and treatment have improved significantly, the demand for this service has decreased over time.
This was a really helpful service, especially early on in the HIV pandemic, as there was a need for caretakers to get additional support. However, due to advances in medical care and support services, this has not been identified as a need and is often covered under insurance, other non-profit or hospice care.
