Medical transportation is crucial for people living with HIV (PLHIV) to access medical and support services, especially in areas where transportation barriers could otherwise prevent them from getting the care they need. Initially, we relied mainly on RTD’s bus tickets and taxis, but now we also use ridesharing services to make sure everyone can get to where they need to.
Transportation remains a significant challenge for the community, primarily due to issues such as long distances, cost, and time constraints associated with public transportation. Although many providers expanded virtual options in response to COVID-19, some folks prefer face-to-face interactions or lack the necessary technology for virtual services.
The usage of RTD bus tickets has declined, partly because RTD has enhanced support for more affordable and comprehensive programs that are not available at agencies (like multiple options for 10-ride bus tickets). Rideshare services like Uber and Lyft have become increasingly popular among providers and clients as they offer successful albeit more expensive transportation assistance options.
Our current unit measurements do not reflect that, as bus tickets count more than rideshares, which has impacted what utilization looks like. However, this does not mean this service category is not needed.
For example, 1 bus ticket = 1 unit and 1 rideshare (which might be the equivalent to multiple bus tickets) also = 1 unit.
